Greetings from us at Welichem! April has just left us with great memories of splendid cherry blossoms all over Vancouver.
In the past month, the Phase IIa Clinical Trial on eczema has progressed smoothly. We are confident that the trial results will enhance our understanding of this common disease and of our drug candidate, WBI-1001, as well as advance our drug development program to a new stage.
Eczema is not contagious, but has a very large patient population around the world. On one hand, family history remains the strongest predictor for the disease. A recent study showed that among 4 year-old children, the likelihood of a child with no family medical history that develops eczema was 27%. The number went up to 38% and 50%, respectively, for children with one or both parents affected by eczema. On the other hand, it is believed that many non-genetic factors can play an important role in the disease development. Environmental factors such as pollution, urban setting, climate change, as well as diet and emotional stress and anxiety, can all trigger the early symptoms. Food allergies have also been shown to cause disease flare-ups. Thus, it is not surprising that the prevalence of eczema has risen significantly over the past 30 years. In fact, the patient recruitment process has gone much faster than expected in our ongoing clinical trial, suggesting a huge market and significant unmet need for an effective drug.
The pre-clinical studies of WBI-2100 are also making progress, with experiments being conducted at several top-notch institutions in Canada and China. However, progress is slower than anticipated due to financial limitations. To speed up this program, the company is actively seeking significant additional funding.
As always, Welichem will keep you posted on its drug development progress through future news releases and newsletters.
