Welichem's October Update

Happy October from the people at Welichem.

We are happy to report in this month's Newsletter that our Phase I Clinical Trials are proceeding well in Montreal; the third cohort of the six scheduled are currently receiving treatment with our WBI-1001. We are pleased with the progress and we are excited about the prospects when we receive further preliminary data.

Meantime, we have filed for world-wide patent protection, through a PCT application, for the utility of our previously patented WBI-2100 anti-cancer compound in stimulating neutrophil production in patients receiving chemotherapy. As we've mentioned before, pre-clinical data demonstrate that WBI-2100 has three characteristics: 1) it inhibits the growth of solid tumours as an anti-cancer treatment; 2) in combination with some of the leading current chemotherapies, WBI-2100 increases the positive effects of those chemotherapies in animal models; and 3) WBI-2100 prevents neutropenia, a potentially life-threatening side-effect of chemotherapy, by increasing the number of neutrophils, a type of white blood cells that fortify the body's natural immune system, in the circulating blood.

Our world-wide patent application, filed jointly with our collaborative research partner in China, Celestial Pharmaceuticals (Shenzhen) Ltd., is specifically directed to the use of our proprietary WBI-2000 compounds to treat or to prevent life-threatening neutropenia.

The world-wide anti-cancer market is expected to exceed $65 Billion by 2012. Currently, some 50% of all cancer patients receive chemotherapy, and of those, up to half experience life-threatening neutropenia.

We are excited that our new patent application and the science underlying it may prove to prevent neutropenia, and thus may help patients achieve better outcomes and longer lives. And meantime, our research and testing on the underlying anti-cancer properties of WBI-2100 - the first two characteristics discussed above - continue full speed ahead.

And of course, so do our clinical trials of our anti-psoriasis dermatology drug candidate, WBI-1001.

We wish you a happy October, including a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
